Monday evening I came third in a Toastmasters impromptu speaking contest at my club. Third out of six contestants. I was actually pretty pleased with that - I've never placed anywhere in a toastmasters contest before!

At this very moment, I'm peroxiding my hair an insane shade of blonde (again.) I had to take off my specs, so now I have to lean really close to the screen to see what I'm typing :-)

Spent the day today in a stuffy, too hot church hall in Cheltenham, at a toastmasters contest. Gah. I saw seventeen speeches. Strewth. I think I'm getting a bit over the toasties thing - I was bored to tears in the end, ended up checking facebook on my phone. I definitely want to go back to being a "normal" toastmater, rather than an area governor. Spare time? What's that?

Hey all, seems to have been a few days since I've posted here.

I came to a startling conclusion this week: I'm doing Too Much. A revelation, I know :-)

This came to me on Tuesday night. I had to:
* Rush from work to meet a guy in Moonee Ponds about a Toasties contest I'm organizing
* Put together an agenda for said contest
* Email about twelve people
* Print and post twenty nine letters about an ALP Branch meeting in a week or two
* Iron a shirt for Wednesday

So I got to bed very late. The whole week's been like this. Monday night I had my always excellent Book Group. Wednesday night I went and judged at a Toastmasters contest in Bundoora. Thursday I went to the Gym.... Somethings gotta give.

Further examples: my upcoming weekend:
Saturday:
* Pick up a package from the post office
* Take Schnitzel to the vet
* Look at some houses to rent
* Go to a barbecue for my sister who's off back to Afghanistan
* (Possibly) go to the gym
* (Possibly) shop for presents for people at the toasties contest
* See the new cut of "Blade Runner" at the Astor.

Sunday:
* Drive to Geelong to meet up with cousins
* While I'm there visit Barwon Books
* And my grandfather (maybe)
* Pick up a Gramophone (where the fuck am I going to put that???)
* Get to the gym
* Put the finishing touches to the Toasties stuff
* Print a whole pile of things

Actually the rest of the week is equally chaotic. Monday I've got a normal Toastmasters meeting. Tuesday, an ALP branch meeting. Wednesay my Toastmasters contest. Thursday off to the Gym. Not to mention Saturday the 24th, when I'll be handing out how to vote cards for four hours, scrutineering then going to a party.

So... Something has to give....

So, next year, I'm going to Cut Back. Go back to being just an ordinary member of Toastmasters. Ditto the ALP. Leaving just my book group (one night a month) and the Gym. And I gotta remember how to just have fun.

You might want to look away, I'm a bit hacked off...!

I'm heavily involved with a group called Toastmasters which is not a cult I swear.

Heavily involved to the extent that I'm the Area Governor of a group of clubs somewhat arbitrarily dubbed N1. I have four clubs I have to look after, some as far away as Camplefield and Saint Albans.

Anwyay, the main thing on my agenda the last few months has been area contests. They all have to happen by the end of this month - which means I have to organise a couple for my clubs. This involves a small amount of back scratching - one needs judges from other parts of town, so I've been visiting other area's to help judge their contests (four so far, at least two more to go.)

So I've been sweating blood organizing the first of these contests, which was on Wednesday. I basically spent most of Tuesday, cup day, running around collecting the bits and pieces I needed. I booked (and paid for) a venue. I printed masses of forms etc. I bought biscuits. I emailed dozens of people who were contestants. Anyway, it's been occupying a lot of my spare time.

And then on Wednesday I actually ran the contest itself. Which I thought went very well.

One of the contests was a kind of spontaneous speaking exercise. It's quite tough, one is asked a question, and then you have to speak about it for at least a minute.

And then what do I get, by way of thanks? Someone whined to my superior in the organisation that the question wasn't "neutral" enough. Fucking conservative twats. The question asked if the government should be supporting the racing industry during the Equine Influenza out break - which I thought was good a relevant give it was the day after cup day. And it gave everyone something to work with...

OK. Just had to get that out of my system. Damn it, this feels a lot like a completely thankless task... I put a lot of work into these extra curricular activities of mine. Perhaps I should have stuck to the Culture Jamming, at least that was meant to be a bit controversial...

*end rant*

So, the rest of my Week. In roughly chronological order.

Monday. Not much happened. By some quirk of programming, I had nothing on Monday night.

Tuesday. Work. Then off to a Toastmasters club in Broadmeadows. Fun. As part of my job as Area Governor. Anyway, it turned out to be quite a sad event - the club decided, that very meeting, to fold and call it a day! Egad.

Broadmeadows is Scary. Hasn't enough street lights for starters.

Wednesday. Visited my GP in the morning. He washed chunks of wax from my ears, which was very Eeeeeeewgh. And said I wasn't showing enough symptoms of Glandular Fever to bother testing for it, and to go away. Went off to the gym after work. I was good, worked really hard.

Someone at work has found a place which delivers curry. So we had a curry feast at lunchtime. Fun!

Thursday, after work, I had to judge at a toastmasters contest in Balwyn (although the club was actually Doncaster). That actually wasn't bad, some nice people there.

As for Friday, see above. Er, below :-)
