I'm a prodigious consumer of music, which could explain the 420+ CD collection. I need new music, well, all the time. Note to self: probably time to start listening to the radio again. But then, JJJ sucks like a 1000 watt vacuum cleaner.

Anyway, my ability to acquire new music is somewhat hampered by a) lack of money and b) moral qualms about downloading people's music. Especially the little bands I'm into being so broke to begin with. Even some big bands need supporters. Plus the fact that the stuff I'm into is usually so obscure I can't find it online. Plus actually knowing a number of muso's well enough to say hello to - Justin Haezlwood and David Thrussell spring to mind - it'd be like stealing from my friends.

Anyway, all the same, I decided to beat problem a) by overcoming moral dilemma b) with the following rationalization:

If I only download music by obscenely successful artists, I won't feel so bad.

On this basis, I've acquired Led Zeppelin's entire recorded output via a bit torrent. Hey, they've sold 600 Million albums, I think they'll cope. I'm also downloading most of Zappa's material as well... Although... Zappa is a bit hard, being still a bit alternative and underground... But... But... I have bought at least five of his albums over the years. And he's not starving to death (Nor are Dweezil, Moon Unit, Amet Rodan or Diva Muffin)... Well, he can't starve to death, he died in the early nineties... Argh! Brain hurty!

(BTW, I've listened to quite a deal of Led Zep over the years, and I'm still trying to work out what all the fuss is about. Will work my way through their albums and see if I "Get It".)

At the same time, I've just ripped about ten of [livejournal.com profile] evildoom_bunny's classical music collection. Not to mention the device I've acquired which should allow me to convert my records to MP3, thus making them more accessible. Hmmmm... Five hours of Laurie Anderson's "United States Live"...

So soon I will be rolling in new music, which will hopefully take me several months to process.

Yes, imagine if (thanks to the black market) there was no big-money left in music... why then it would be left to the musicians who only made music for the love of making music... and that would be horrible!

This is really just a rationalization. People don't Robin Hood it to even up some economic unfairness. People Robin Hood it because they're self-interested (not even greedy anymore, they're self-interested). The Robin Hood aspect is just a rationalization.

The radio rocks if you tune to the right station, I find JJJ boring, but I listen to ABC Radio National all the time, Melbourne AM 621. They have several really awesome music shows each with their on speciality. You can stream past shows online, check them out:

Radio National Homepage & Weekly Schedule

The Music Show
Music Deli
The Daily Planet
The Rhythm Divine

Yeah over summer I've been listening to News Radio, because a lot of the Radio National discussion/information shows have the back-up hosts while the regulars are on holiday. The music shows remain good, because the hosts only need about 5 minutes of personality per hour ;)

Most of the interesting music I've heard in the past 12 months has been directly or indirectly discovered via Radio National btw ;)

Hang on. You know Justin Heazlewood? As in, THE Justin Heazlewood? The Bedroom Philosopher?

Really?

I think I'm going to have to cling to your trouser cuffs now and follow you around.
