NYE

Dear Diary,

Should transcribe my New Years Eve.

First off, I'm a bit over it, to be honest. This was something like the thirty fifth NYE I've experienced. And in fact, they've often sucked.

Bad Example:
End 1999, beginning of 2000 I was at the Falls Festival. They venue had been changed at the last possible minute - I found out on the day - from the regular venue at Lorne to a farm near Torquay, where another festival run by the same guys usually took place earlier in the year. Apparently the Lorne venue was all mud from too much rain (those were the days). For three days, the weather was shit - dusty and windy alternating with heavy rain. There was some stupid bar arrangement where you'd have to buy tokens for beer then get the beer from another tent. I didn't have a shower for three days, some drunken idiot fell on my tent and broke it, and then the crowd threw beer bottles at the Violent Femmes. Fun.

Good Example:
When I was eight, I was in plaster after surgery. I remember just managing to stay awake to watch the numbers 1980 come up on the screen before falling into a deep sleep.

So for the end of 2006, I was looking for something fun to do. My only real criteria being that [livejournal.com profile] evildoom_bunny had to be there.

A Goth/Noise nightclub in the city (Lash) had a regular night on a Sunday, and this one just happened to also be NYE, so we decided what the hell - we're not Goths, lets go along anyway. Bugger the fireworks etc.

The place was (eventually) full of terribly overdressed goths, which I always find amusing - how the heck one walks in some of those boots, I have no idea.

So we sat and drank and laughed at the goths (not out loud!) and [livejournal.com profile] evildoom_bunny, [livejournal.com profile] stillbeing and I danced when the music was good to dance to. Most of this electronic stuff sounds more or less the same to me, but with the help of Evil Doom and Still I could just make out what made good music to dance to.

Most of the Goths were faaaaaar too cool to dance, so we had the admittedly small downstairs dance floor to ourselves a fair bit of the time - not to worry, I dance like a spazz and a tad self consciously, so the fewer witnesses the better.

Oh yes, I danced, something I haven't really done since I inhabited various TISM mosh pits years ago. In fact, I was accused of "going off" by one of the only other enthusiastic dancers there. But damn it's tiring, bouncing 95 kilos of me around is not something I can do for more than ten minutes at a stretch! And damn I sweated. I can see why there are excercise classes based on dancin'.

So we alternating sitting and dancing for about six hours. Goths are too cool for NYE, so it was barely acknowledged - which given the jadedness expressed above, didn't really bother me.

A short, fat little goth photographer took some shots of [livejournal.com profile] evildoom_bunny and [livejournal.com profile] stillbeing (I stepped out of the shot because I wasn't feeling very photogenic). See some of them over on Evildoom's LJ.

We made a 7/11 run for supplies, and then bumped into a Jammer called Alan who we hadn't seen for months. He told us about some great shenanigans he'd been getting up to in the eastern suburbs.

And then eventually, around 4AM, we made tracks, to the "thoughfully" provided all-night public transport. Whoever organised this needs to think it through a little - We waited ages at a tram stop with [livejournal.com profile] stillbeing for a 75 tram which was sooooo packed it didn't even stop. So we ended up at Flinders Street Station, where she got an equally packed train and we managed to get on a train which went relatively close to my place... Which then stopped for at least 15-20 minutes at Jolimont because some drunken fuckers got into a fight in another carriage. No surprise there - they should have bunged transit cops on every train because this stuff is bound to happen... Think of the contents of four hundred taxis packed onto a train...

Anyway, eventually we got home around 5AM, the sun was coming up, the birds were singing, [livejournal.com profile] schnitzelrug though it a good time to play in the cupboard, scratch noisily in her litter tray and climb on the bed with us...

Man, I haven't stayed up that late in ages.

So, what did you all do? :-)

It sounds like you had fun. Well...parts of it sound fun. Dancing, to me, is always going to be compared to hideous physical torture (could this be bcause I am entirely lacking in rhythm? Probably!) but...goths are pretty even with the mockability factor and at least you had good company. I think that's the main thing for NYE, the company. If you're stuck with shitty people then it sucks. Good people make the night no matter what you're doing.

I have a sort of standing arrangement for NYE. It's the birthday of one of my close friends so I usually end up spending it with her and a few of our other good friends. This year there was a barbecue. Just the four of us. Lots of drinks, sausages and assorted hilarity. I don't think I've ever had a better start to the year :)

Consider it already done. Well, if you know the shrunk, you'd more than likely know my work, Rare Records. I did Year 10 work experience there in 1998 ... you know how Doug paid me for those two weeks? With the first two shrunk EPs! Hahahaha I was happy to get em thou. I've now worked for Doug on and off for the last 8 years (scary to think about that). I used to run a nerdy little pre-shrunk fan site called Creation. Ran into Davage at Chadstone the other day, was a cool suprise. He's always the nicest guy, even though I don't think he remembered my name :)

Videos next time, please. >D

"Criterion"? And [livejournal.com profile] schnitzelrug sounds cute.

I watched the fireworks on TV and waved a glowstick.

On the spur of the moment, I bought a tube of 15 glowsticks at a cheap Asian store. It cost $2.50. I still have 12 left; would you like one?

The Melbourne Shuffle?

You don't need raves to have fun with glowsticks. :) They're great inspiration to write songs.

NYE was a non-event.

We did absolutely nothing. I didn't even bother to wander outside to look for the fireworks I could hear going off. I am completely sick of NYE because it never lives up to the hype. Besides, we have a preschooler to look after, and unless someone else volunteers to give up their NYE celebrations we can't afford to go out _and_ pay for babysitting at the same time.
