I have a passport...
Sep. 13th, 2006 10:50 amMy family is one of contrasts.
My sister has lived overseas for the best part of a decade. She's currently in Yemen, but has also been in Afghanistan and Indonesia. And might be off to Sudan soon.
I just got my first ever passport. I've never had one before. I've received packages that are better traveled than me... And now I'm about to apply for a Dutch one! I probably have sufficient Dutch ancestors to entitle me to one. Hmmmmm... European Union Passport... Long working holiday here I come!

Date: 2006-09-13 02:15 am (UTC)hmmm i'm not as well travelled as your sister but i did get my first passport at the ripe old age of 9.
however... had my father not moved overseas to marry an american woman i wouldn't have travelled overseas till i was at least 18 i would imagine as both of my parents are afraid of flying they don't do it all that often
dutch passport eh? i wonder how hard they are to get????
i've been trying to get a british passport - my dad was born over there - but being a bastard myself makes this rather difficult.
boo hiss!!! (to the evil consulate)

Date: 2006-09-13 05:45 am (UTC)Getting a Dutch passport hinges on the Netherlands believing my mother is still Dutch - which apperently they do. I have to fill in a bunch of forms and see if it floats :-)
I don't think you're a bastard :-)

Date: 2006-09-13 09:23 am (UTC)So glad I'm not the only one! I can claim I've travelled overseas but really it's a technicality, since I was born overseas and we moved to Australia. Still...when I say it most people tend to assume I've been backpacking around Europe or something and I don't think it's my place to tell them the cold hard truth :P
I keep wanting to get a passport. I've never had one either.
Get one.
Date: 2006-09-14 01:04 am (UTC)Be warned though - they're not cheap these days! Mine was $193!!!
Re: Get one.
Date: 2006-09-14 01:38 am (UTC)If and when I can afford one, I'll get one. I just have to start being a good girl and saving all my money up (and of course that'll happen right around the time you see pigs flying around outside the window *sigh*). I think if I got one I'd feel obligated to make some sort of plan to go somewhere. Otherwise it'd stare at me and make me feel guilty.
Cos...passports do that, you know :P
Re: Get one.
Date: 2006-09-15 01:50 am (UTC)I could go to London and spend a month just catching up with all my friends there.
As for money... $193 is not really that much. As for saving it... I've been working for over ten years and have what is officially called diddly to show for it.
Re: Get one.
Date: 2006-09-15 07:38 am (UTC)I'd love to go back to England and see some of the places I remember...and then travel around Europe. Unfortunately my bank account screams whenever I so much as buy a pack of loo roll so it's out of the question right now. Unless I resort to a life of crime ;)
I think I'd like to go to Sydney next year. I know I don't need a passport for it but...at least I'd get to go somewhere and I haven't seen much of Sydney (outside of coach terminals and other scary places). It'd be nice to go and explore. Hmm. I typed that as "go and explode". How odd! :P
