Cheap Cocktails and Sticky Labels
Oct. 23rd, 2006 01:35 amAs you may have heard me whining, I've recently been struck down by turning 35.
Saturday night, I gathered together some percentage of my extended network (about 20 people total, so about 15% of the people I know :-P ) at a bar in Carlton.
And what a nice bar it was. Bar Nothing, on Pigdon street. Open fire, couches, ancient black and white TV's showing Casablanca, and cheap cocktails - as in $20 for six!
Lets see, of the live journalers, there was
evildoom_bunny (of course!),
stillbeing and
ok_i_give_in.
In order to make it easier for all these people from all the disparate groups I'm part of to get along, I made a label (scan to follow!) with a series of tick boxes. It said "Relationship to Paul" and then one choses from "Uni", "Online", "Work" etc. Thus enabling everyone to start that conversation about "So how do you know Paul?" See, I am a party innovator :-) Necessary though, so my bookgroup members could talk to people from work who could then talk to people I know through Sara. And random people like Andy - I'm still not sure how I know him :-)
We got there early and claimed a prime set of couches in the middle of the room. And we stayed there till they chucked us out!
My "little" brother and my little second cousin Asher showed up with a bunch of their friends. So I got the tick the "relative" box on the sticky label.
evildoom_bunny and I went to Brunnetti's in the arvo and picked up an amazingly indulgent cake - chocolate cappuccino... Drool. We ended up with more slices than people - so I gave one slice to some random strangers at the next table. I was trying to avoid having anyone sing to me, so I didn't put candles on it. Didn't work though - I had Happy Birthday sung to me :-)
The biggest surprise was the arrival of Tim Longhurst, who was down for a conference from Sydney, and also for my party! That's dedication!
Anyway, it was great having a Do for my People. I miss having a big place were I can have regular parties, like the place with the built in barbecue. One day soon, we'll be livin' in a bigger place, then you all be at my place pulling beer from the ice in the bath :-)
[EDIT: Tuesday. I've just re-read this, and realised parts of it were just a little inarticulate...! So I've cleaned it up a tad... I need an editor.]
