Man, I'm at least two weeks behind in my blogging!
Last weekend, on Saturday, I took the train to Geelong to see my mother and my ancient grandfather. He's about 91. I have a car, as I've mentioned, but I'm sick of the Geelong road, and Fuji the Wonder Car doesn't have power steering so it can be tiring to drive.
And trains are very Zen, I take 'em to work every day. So I read a book the whole way there. The old guy sitting opposite me spent a good third of the journey fiddling with his mobile phone, then handing it to his wife to work out what he should be doing, then stabbing away at the keyboard with his fat thumbs. And I suspect there was football game on down there involving Sydney, given the number of people on the train with their jumpers on. What is up with that? Why do you have to look like your team? Couldn't you just dress normally and go "yay team"?
Geelong was actually not bad. We had lunch at a restaurant on the shorefront. Then I dragged my mother to a really great second hand bookshop there. If you're ever down there, look it up - it's called Barwon Books (go figure about the name - I think there's a river called that, not to mention a town down the road) and has a lot of excellent books. I should know, I bought four!!!
Then we visited the grandfather. He's getting a bit long in the tooth - he's 91 - and spends most of his time telling stories about his life. My mother tells me the stories vary and become more embellished every time he tells them... He still lives at home, and looks after himself. I should be that kind of old.
So I got to hear all about how he built buses in the thirties for a Dutch bus company (that side of my family are from the Netherlands) and invented a clever folding door for them... Not sure how mush of this to believe. He's also giving away stuff, old toys and things. Whenever I was down there as a kid I used to play with the wooden tops he made with his lathe (ok, and I still do, most recently at christmas) and this time he gave me one. It's sitting on my desk.
Caught the train back to Melbourne - which is still very zen. Despite the bogans who also got onto it. Met
evildoom_bunny in the city and we went and had dumplings at a place on Tattersalls Lane, then went to see "Thank You For Smoking" at the Westgarth.
