Fire! Fire! Not.

Zowey. I'm one of two fire wardens at my company - we only take up one floor. This morning, we had a fire evacuation drill, which was fun because the other warden is on two months leave!

But, it went great. We cleared the whole building in 8 minutes. I made a couple of mistakes - I went down the wrong stairway for example, and had to go back in the front door to find the chief warden. But we're all safe, and now everyone knows they're not allowed to take their coffee with them :-)

Yes, in the scramble for survival, anything in people's hands becomes a potential hazard to other people's lives, if it is dropped.

So if you think your little flock is a bit complacent about fire drills, don't hesitate to let them know that the instruction to leave their laptop behind is NOT for their own safety - it's for the safety of everyone else, who deserved to not have their ankle broken and their retreat impeded by crap that has been dropped in that tiny stairwell!!

Warden training has the effect of making one quite paranoid. They ask difficult questions like "How would you get out of your house if it were filled with smoke and the front door was inaccessable?" I don't know! I've even taken to checking for fire exits in most buildings I enter.

But yes, anything could be a hazard in the confined space of the fire stairs. Even not hanging onto the hand rail!

And I'll also bet that if there's real emergency, everyone will forget all I've taught them. Ah well...
