Hey all, as some of you may have heard, Friday was Buy Nothing Day.

We Jammers had a plan to set up in the Bourke Street Mall, and hassle shoppers. We had a bit of a Warm Body Fade. In other words, several people who swore blind that they'd be there didn't show up. What is it with lefties? So many are all talk and no action... [livejournal.com profile] evildoom_bunny and preserved all the same.

We set up a little stand (ok, a camp table with some posters and a portable stereo) in between Myers and David Jones, and started making noise and hassling shoppers. The little old ladies were very supportive, not so all the Paris Hilton clones walking by.

A chap by the name of Cameron from the Podcast Network turned up with his video camera - just as a couple of street cleaners from the Melbourne City Council turned up and started hassling us. [livejournal.com profile] evildoom_bunny had used some chalk to write appropriate slogans all over the pavement. Some fuckhead from David Jones had called them to complain, so they spent the next ten minutes noisily scrubbing the pavement around us. Very annoying. Cameron's podcast should be up in a few days, will post a link when I have one.

Later in the day, [livejournal.com profile] stillbeing and another guy who's name I can't recall (sorry dude!) came along and gave us a hand. Which was really cool, meant I got to talk to people more.

We handed out a whole shitload of fliers (that's a new measure of size :-) and about 50 music CDs we made with appropriate songs on it. They were popular.

I actually work on Bourke Street, and in the three or so hours we were there, at least four of my cow-orkers wandered by. Not one of them recognized me - granted I was wearing a cap and glasses, but I think it was mostly a context thing. That wasn't where they were expecting to see me, being a rowdy activist while I was on my day off :-)

Didn't manage to persuade anyone to part with their credit cards. There wasn't the time - I had to keep an eye on our table, hand out fliers and talk to passers by all at the same time. Too much too do!

Just as we were about to pack up, a photographer from the Age showed up and took a whole bunch of photos of us. Non of which made it into the paper, but we did get written up on the Tuesday and again on the Saturday (which was coupled with this article - good sub-editing). Tuesday was online only, Saturday was in the actual paper! So as far as I'm concerned, that's a success. Also, you can have a listen to me on interviewed on SBS's Alchemy on the Wednesday. That's a 2.5 Meg MP3, you have been warned :-)
